Tonsils Infection

Tonsillitis

Tonsillitis is an inflammation of the tonsils. This is caused by an infection. The tonsils are enlarged, red,
and often coated -partly or entirely- by a substance that is yellow, gray, or white. Tonsillitis usually occurs as part of a
throat infection. Tonsillitis usually begins with sudden sore throat and painful swallowing.

Some of the major symptoms of tonsillitis are:

1) a very sore throat

2) fever

3) redder-than-normal tonsils

4) chills

5) a yellow or white coating on the tonsils

6) a funny-sounding voice

7) swollen glands in the neck

8) bad breath

A person with tonsillitis may not experience all symptoms.

Some tips that can help you feel better:

* Drink plenty of fluids.

* Eat smooth foods, including flavored gelatin, soups, ice-pops, and applesauce.

* Avoid hard, crunchy, or spicy foods.

* Rest.

* Throat pain and fever may be improved with over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen (Advil, for example) or
acetaminophen (Tylenol).

* Ease sore throat pain by gargling frequently with warm salt water (8 ounces of warm water mixed with 1 teaspoon salt).

Tonsillitis is diagnosed by performing a rapid strep test, also called a throat culture. The doctor will use a long cotton swab to swipe
off some of the stuff on the surface of the back of your throat. The cotton swab will be tested. This test will determine whether you
have tonsillitis and whether it is caused by a bacteria or a virus.

Tonsillitis is contagious. Tonsillitis usually spreads from person to person by contact with the throat or nasal fluids of someone who
is already infected.

Treatment for tonsillitis depends on whether it was caused by a virus or bacteria. If the tonsillitis was caused by strep bacteria
(streptococci), the doctor will prescribe antibiotics. If the tonsillitis was caused by a virus, your body will fight off the infection on its
own.

Medication prescribed will be penicillin. It is given as a single-dose injection (a shot) or may be provided as a prescription for oral
antibiotics (pills taken by mouth). People who are allergic to penicillin may be treated with erythromycin. Treatment with oral antibiotics
may be provided for 10-14 days. It may take several weeks for the tonsils and swollen glands to return to normal size.

Tonsillitis can develop into more serious medical conditions in some people. Anyone with tonsillitis who is drooling, unable to eat or
drink, or has any breathing difficulty needs to go to a hospital's Emergency Department immediately for evaluation.

Sometimes the tonsils may swell or form a peritonsillar abscess resulting in blockage of the feeding and breathing pathways.
You may have difficulty breathing or eating. Rarely, other conditions such as diphtheria, a foreign body, or cancer may start with a
sore throat. If an abscess or a more worrisome condition (cancer, diphtheria) appears to be present, the doctor may consult an ear,
nose, and throat specialist.

A tonsillectomy may be recommended for an individual with chronic tonsillitis. A tonsillectomy may be necessary if you experience
frequent episodes of tonsillitis within a year, or have five episodes a year for two straight years.

The tonsils may also be removed if they are large and are blocking the throat. Tonsils that are too large can cause breathing problems
for children or adults, and a tonsillectomy is sometimes recommended to relieve this problem. Enlarged tonsils also may be removed
if they seem to be causing a problem known as obstructive sleep apnea, which is a condition wherein breathing is blocked during
sleep when the airway pulls shut. It can occur in children as well as in adults.
